Direct Shipping vs Parcel Consolidation from China: Which Is Cheaper?
One item or many? Does the seller ship overseas? Who pays the duties? These three questions decide whether direct shipping or consolidation is right for you. Use the comparison table and worked examples below to decide in a minute.
Short Answer: Direct Shipping or Consolidation?
Direct Shipping vs Consolidation: Comparison Table
Whether you are comparing Taobao direct shipping with consolidation or any other seller, the differences come down to these 10 points.
| Factor | Direct shipping | Consolidation (JunFeng) |
|---|---|---|
| How it works | Seller or platform ships straight to your overseas address | Items go to a Chinese warehouse first, then are packed together and sent abroad |
| Seller support | The seller must ship overseas; many shops do not, or the overseas address cannot be entered | Sellers ship as a normal domestic order; almost all work (a few refuse consolidation addresses, so switch shops or follow our guide) |
| How freight is charged | Each parcel is charged separately, each with its own first weight | Items are combined and charged on total chargeable weight, with the first-weight fee paid once (UK from CNY 55 / 0.5 kg) |
| Several items / platforms | Every item ships on its own, so charges add up | Parcels from Taobao, Pinduoduo, JD and 1688 can go in one box |
| Duties and taxes | Depends on the channel; some must be paid by the recipient on delivery | DDP duty-paid clearance; destination import duties are included in the fee |
| Delivery time | Depends on the seller and channel chosen | Domestic leg to warehouse + international leg: air general goods UK 4-8, USA 5-12, Canada 6-12 working days |
| Inspection and storage | Usually no warehouse inspection step | Photo confirmation on arrival available; 180 days of free storage |
| Packing | Usually the seller's original packaging, often bulkier | Free consolidation; clothes can be vacuum-packed to cut volumetric weight |
| Returns | Follows the seller's overseas return rules; usually more hassle | Return or refund under platform rules before arrival; photo check after arrival before dispatch |
| Best for | A single item, a seller that clearly ships overseas, or high-value items you want the seller to guarantee directly | Several items, several platforms, sellers that do not ship abroad, or anyone who wants lower freight and duty-paid delivery |
Worked Example: How Much Does Consolidation Save?
The saving comes from one thing: combining parcels so you pay the first-weight fee only once. The example below uses three clothing items of about 0.4 kg each, comparing “three separate parcels at the same rate card” with “one consolidated parcel”.
| Destination | Sent as 3 parcels (each at 0.5 kg first weight) | Consolidated (1.2 kg total, charged as 1.5 kg) | Saving |
|---|---|---|---|
| United Kingdom | CNY 55 x 3 = CNY 165 | CNY 55 + CNY 36 x 2 = CNY 127 | CNY 38 (about 23%) |
| United States | CNY 110 x 3 = CNY 330 | CNY 110 + CNY 68 x 2 = CNY 246 | CNY 84 (about 25%) |
| Canada West | CNY 68 x 3 = CNY 204 | CNY 68 + CNY 44 x 2 = CNY 156 | CNY 48 (about 24%) |
With only one item: a single light item is still charged at the 0.5 kg first-weight rate (UK CNY 55, USA CNY 110, Canada West CNY 68), so consolidation is not much cheaper; its advantages are combining, duty-paid delivery and working with sellers that do not ship abroad. If a seller that ships overseas quotes a clearly lower price, direct shipping is fine.
Note: “sent as 3 parcels” uses the same JunFeng rate card to show the saving from combining parcels. It is not the actual price of any platform's direct shipping.
When to Choose Direct Shipping, and When Consolidation
Ask three questions: does the seller ship overseas, how many items are you buying, and do you want duty-paid delivery?
Direct shipping fits when
- You buy a single item and the seller clearly ships overseas
- The seller's overseas freight is reasonable
- The item is valuable and you want the seller to be fully responsible
- You do not plan to combine it with other purchases
Consolidation fits when
- You buy two or more items and want to pay first weight once
- You shop across Taobao, Pinduoduo, JD and 1688
- The seller does not ship abroad or the overseas address cannot be entered
- You want DDP duty-paid delivery with no tax at the door
- You want to store items for up to 180 days and ship when ready
Direct Shipping vs Consolidation for Singapore and Other Countries
The logic is the same: use direct shipping for a single item from a seller that ships overseas; use consolidation for multiple items, multiple platforms or sellers that do not ship abroad. Direct Shipping vs Consolidation FAQ
Direct shipping means the seller or platform sends your purchase straight to your overseas address, one order per parcel with its own freight charge. Consolidation means your purchases are first sent to a JunFeng warehouse in China (a domestic address, so sellers ship normally), then packed together and sent abroad in one shipment. The key differences are whether you can combine parcels, whether the seller ships overseas, and who pays duties.
It depends on how many items you buy. For a single item from a seller that ships overseas, direct shipping is simpler and may be cheaper. For two or more items, or items from different platforms and shops, consolidation charges the first-weight fee only once and is usually cheaper. Example: three clothing items of about 0.4 kg each to the UK cost about CNY 165 when sent as three separate parcels at the same rate card, versus about CNY 127 consolidated (CNY 55 first weight + CNY 36 x 2), a saving of about 23%.
Most Taobao sellers only ship within China, so an overseas address cannot be entered or the order is refused. The few sellers that do ship overseas usually charge far more per item than consolidation. With consolidation you use a Chinese warehouse address, the seller treats the order as a normal domestic order, and parcels from several shops can be packed into one box. See the Taobao overseas shipping guide.
Direct parcels usually clear customs through courier or postal channels, and import duties may have to be paid by the recipient on delivery, depending on the channel and destination. JunFeng consolidation uses DDP duty-paid clearance: the shipping fee already includes destination import duties, so there is nothing extra to pay at delivery. See the Customs & Duties Guide for current rules.
If the seller clearly ships overseas at a reasonable price, direct shipping is fine. If the seller does not ship overseas, or you will keep buying from other shops, send the item to the consolidation warehouse first: JunFeng offers 180 days of free storage so you can combine everything later. A single light item is charged at the 0.5 kg first-weight rate: about CNY 55 to the UK, CNY 110 to the USA and CNY 68 to Canada West.
Consolidation adds a domestic leg (seller to warehouse) and packing time, but the international leg uses dedicated air lines: about 4-8 working days to the UK, 5-12 to the USA and 6-12 to Canada (air general goods reference). If you wait to collect more parcels, total time depends on when you request dispatch; if you ship as soon as items arrive, there is almost no extra waiting.
The logic is the same everywhere: use direct shipping for a single item from a seller that ships overseas, and consolidation for multiple items, multiple platforms or sellers that do not ship abroad. Note that JunFeng currently operates the UK, USA and Canada routes; for Singapore or other destinations please contact customer service first to confirm availability and a quote.
Before the parcel reaches the JunFeng warehouse you can request a return or refund from the seller under the original platform's rules. After arrival, request a photo confirmation to check the item is intact before it is packed and sent abroad, so problems are caught before the international trip.
